Lessons from the Brits Week 26 November 2nd to November 8th

Fall has arrived not only in the beautiful colors but the frost came this week as well.  We are still walking back and forth to the temple in our sweaters but there has been a time or two a coat would have felt good.  It is still so very pretty!
LIE
Road Signs:  Since the world revolves around a round-about the road signs over here are very
different as well.  Have a look.  We had to add our two favorites.

Okay, right, well then.  It looks so cute on my word document, but it will not copy over to the blog.  I guess I will have to take some pix so that will take a bit.  SORRY!

1.  Fasting
Fast Sunday is the first Sunday of every month where we fast 2 meals and give the money you would have used for food to the poor.  Fast are always more meaningful if you have a specific thing you are fasting for.  We realize how very blessed we are but we are human and always seem to want more blessings.  This Sunday we are fasting for our family – to have good jobs, good health, and I will announce on the blog that Neil and Becca are expecting and are far enough along that they will announce this new excitement in all our lives.  We are very excited and are fasting and praying everything continues to go well.  This fast is also for our nephew Mitch (Jerry and Ardith’s son) who underwent 2 pretty big skin cancer surgeries on Friday and is waiting for results on his condition.  Our prayers are with you Mitch and family.
We had a lovely surprise at church as our friend Rubin brought us cookies again.  (Wish we weren’t fasting.)  Church was very nice and then home.  I fixed a big pot of potato soup and then we let it simmer while we napped.
Finally, we ate.  After dinner we went to a fireside by the Matthews who had served a mission in Nigeria.  WOW!  Not sure that I want to ever go there.  They had some amazing stories from snakes to gunshots but they are still here to testify that Jesus is the Christ.
After the fireside, Mulholland’s came over for a Carmel sundae and we watched their video of a bike riding in Isle of the Skye where we just were.  AMAZING!  In fact, why don’t I just add the link so those of you who can watch can see a most amazing biker and some beautiful scenery?

Enjoy, but be prepared to be amazed!
I went out to take a reflective picture of the temple in the fall with the beautiful red tree.
The ducks would have none of it and wanted in the picture!

2.  Day Off!
We decided to just take this day off.  It was rather wonderful.  We slept in, exercised, just sat around, blogged in the dungeon, cut Brad’s hair, washed and ironed and watched a movie!  Wonderful day!

Two weeks ago we took a picture under this tree with the beautiful fall colors.
Now it is empty.  Sorry about the shadow, but the sun was a bit much.

3.  S-l-o-w    D-a-y
I guess I am officially old.  I applied for Medicare last year at 65 and this morning I completed my online application for Social Security.  We will see how that goes while we are over here.   The application was easy enough – now if it worked.
I forgot one pair of pants to iron and my mother said if you heat up the iron you have to iron 4 things so I ran around the house looking for more.  Everything is now pressed and wrinkle free.
We also had a great walk.  I know it was great because I am still stiff and sore.
Oh my goodness.  Where are the people?  We are on afternoon shift which is always calmer but this was just too much.  I was in clothing and I had 3 customers all day, 2 of which only had a credit card and we can’t accept them so they got free clothing!
The ducks were have a sleep in.  They looked at me taking the
picture but were too cozy to care to move.
4.  The Contest!
Wow, did I ever sleep.  My nothing day completely wore me out and I slept forever last night.  We made it up and on our walk which was very nice.
We tried to take a nap but that really didn’t work that well so we just fixed some potato soup for lunch.  The temple is still so slow.  Brother Callaghan said the night would be worse because it was fireworks day.  I asked about that and he is what I learned.
“Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London, and months later the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot's failure.”  Wikipedia
There you have it and we had a very slow night.  The slowest night in clothing was a 95 pence night with Sister Ibbotson.  I didn’t have a customer in the first 5 hours so I thought I would break her record.  Four customers showed up that night so she is still the winner.

5.  New Driver
I will never understand this one but you can drive in England for one year on any driver’s license.  Then you have to pay to take a big test and prove you know what you are doing.  Crazy!  It seems like you should have done that before they let you loose on these crazy roads.  Mulholland’s just reached their year mark, so he is no longer our van driver for shopping and trips.  Brother Blake gets the new job.  So we went shopping this morning with Brother Blake and had a great time.
The temple was still pretty sparse today but I wasn’t in clothing so I had a bit of variety.  Brad and I ended in sealings and that was just lovely.  Home to a cup of hot Caro and a cookie!  Life :).

It was our first frost this morning.  The sun came beaming up afterwards
but they said there will be lots more soon.
Our heat in our flat doesn't work -- better get that fixed!

6.  Funny Dream
We always start our day with reading some church book.  We are now reading church history.  I had fallen back to sleep and was dreaming a man in primary was reading church history and wouldn’t stop.  I got so angry with him I pushed the book off the table and tried to get the children in primary singing.  I raised my hand to lead them in a song and he read again.  I screamed at him and Brad says, “What?”  My dream and reality got mixed up there.
Mulholland’s were having some friends from Ireland come to the temple to do baptisms for the dead.  They offered to cook for them and the people said, “Great – there will be 17 of us.”  Oh!  We had offered to help but she had all the food under control so we just went over and carried it from her place to the accommodations longue and helped her set it all up.
The temple was a nice day.  I was back in clothing and actually had some people that needed help so that was much more fun.

7.  Moving Day!
The Blake’s got their key to move and they wanted to do it this morning.  I woke up at 4:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep.  Brad was awake a lot too.  We called at 6:30 and they weren’t ready for us so we went over around 7:30.  We made 2 big loads of stuff which it up and down 2 flights of stairs so we were pretty tired.  Then we got ready and we were off to the temple.
It was a pretty good day at the temple.   We had 3 coaches pull in so their seemed to be a lot of people.  I found my 3 sisters joined at the hip, but only 2 were there but Sister Porter had her 93 year old dad  and he was a hoot.  At 93 he just baptized a friend (did the actual baptism) and is now teaching another friend.  We had the best chat.
I spent the afternoon in baptistery so I was running ragged doing mostly laundry.  I worked straight up till about 5:10 and left the last lot for Monday.
Home to pork chops so boy was I happy.  And even better, the movie tonight is “Amazing Grace”.  I LOVE that show.  I am so happy that I have been to William Wilberforce’s grave – he is one of my hero’s for sure.
After the movie we all rushed to the longue to watch “Remembering 2014.”  It was wonderful.  It is their November 11th tribute to all the militaries and the fallen soldiers that paid the price for the freedoms of today.  Well done!  Well done!  Just brilliant!  Brad walked in for the very last number but he was so amazed that the entire end of the show was scripture reading and prayers.  They believe in God over here and they are not ashamed to say it in public.  I was a bit surprised when 'God Save the Queen' came on and Brad jumped to his feet.   It was a beautiful night indeed!
One last picture of the poppies at Tower of London!
So, the week has come and gone.  And it has been a very significant week indeed.  It finished our 26th week in the mission, which means we are 1/3rd finished and have 1 year to go!  In one breath it feels like forever since we left and in the next I can’t even remember the time passing.  I hope I feel that way more and more as the holiday’s approach.  Just realize I will forever miss family, friend and home and pray for you every day!
Remember, what need I say more?
Floss and smile,
Our Love,
The Parkinson’s

I am in the dungeon, because we are running out of internet at our home, and whether that is the problem or not, I do not know; but this computer is jumping all over the place and I cannot get a picture to stay still or get the caption under it.  SORRY  but I am close to pulling my hair out!

Lessons from the Brits Week 25 October 26th to November 1st

Seriously, November!  Wow, I told you I needed to hold onto my hat.  Time is really passing quickly and I bet from now to Christmas will be the fastest or slowest days of our lives.

1.  Rotating Dinner Guests
We had thought we would have the Blake’s over to dinner and for some reason Brad said he would cook them hamburgers.  I guess he wanted something American.  Then the Roger’s moved in next door and we didn’t even realize it and didn’t help.  (We are their Home Teacher’s too – shame on us.)  So, we decided to have them both over.  Well, of course that didn’t go smoothly.  Roger’s had to leave by 1:40 and Blake’s couldn’t come till 1:45.  So, we changed the menu and had refrigerator soup and croissants.  I thought I had made enough for an army but we slicked up every bit and really could have had more.  We had brownies and ice cream with our new Costco Carmel sauce.  WOW was it good.  (Brad’s brownies of course)
The Roger’s had run every so quickly but the Blake’s stayed and we talked forever.  We love them.  They are the best ever.  Brother Blake – Mark, use to be a funeral director so we talked about all the differences in funerals here and in America and on the Rez.  We had a great time.  Brad even read ‘Road Closed’ for them.
Oh, and they ended daylight savings time today!
Do you like the jet coming over?
In both of these fall pictures I have the top of the tree decorated with the Angel Moroni.

2.  London Eye
We have wanted to make it back to London and ride the London Eye.  We talked to both Brown’s and Mulholland’s about it and both seemed interested.  I also want my steak dinner.  Well, the Brown’s actually had one of their daughter’s come to London with her husband and their 3 oldest children and the one that is to be born in 2 months.  They had all planned on going to London.  Mulholland’s were game to go with us if it was a clear day and it was beautiful so we headed out for London on the 9:14 train.  We bought the tube tickets so we could get around London quickly!  *&#$%* The first thing they wanted to see was the poppies at the Tower of London.  (I have shown some pictures of them.)  They have a poppy for every soldier killed in World War II.  It is most impressive.  We headed to the tower and realized that we were not alone in our thinking.  I would say there were about 500,000 people there with us but Brad says I tend to exaggerate.   Only the picture can tell you for sure.  We walked around 3 walls of the outside.  We told them we would love to go in again as we had not seen it all when we were there but Brian said he would rather get to the Eye and see London in the day.  We walked over Tower Bridge and Brian got the great idea to walk back to the Eye.  Some lady (probably on drugs) told him it would be a lovely walk and would only take about 20 to 25 minutes.  We walked for 20 minutes and found a toilet.  Then LeeAnn had to stand in queue for the toilet for over 30 minutes.  That took us off the route and I started going the wrong way but we got sort of turned around.  We walked through a deli row and Brian, Brad and I got a grilled Brats.  Another 20 minutes of walking and I found a tube station but Brian said it would be easier to just walk than get on and off the tube.  We walked another 20 -30 minutes and finally saw the Eye.  The queue was forever.  Brad went in to buy the tickets and I stood outside in the queue to get on.  Well, his queue was longer than my queue.  I made it to the place they take the tickets and the man threw me out because we cannot stand in the queue till we have our tickets in our hand.  JOY!  It was another 30 minutes before Brad got the tickets.  We couldn’t even stand in line till 3:30 PM.
Since we had a while we walked over to Westminster Abbey again and sat in the chapel next to it.  I love Westminster Abbey.  We walked back to the Eye and stopped at McDonald’s to get something for LeeAnn and since Brad and I had shared we shared a burger there as well.  We got into queue and it moved steadily and we made it on the Eye before the sun went down.  However, somewhere on the way down the sun did set behind the London sky.  I loved it!
So, if you do not know what the Eye is, you best look at the pictures or on the internet.  The Eye is one of the world’s largest Ferris wheels.  It never stops unless there is a wheel chair that needs a bit more time but goes up and down so slowly and so smoothly that you never know it is even moving.  All of the sudden you are looking Big Ben in the face and then you are looking way down to see him.  It was amazing and wonderful.  LeeAnn didn’t ride and I don’t know why but we just loved it.  I want to go again and again.
We got down and had to walk back to the train station and they were all in the mood to just go home.  We found our train and boarded just fine.  We were on coach 4 of 12.  After a stop this group was major complaining about missing their stop.  The train was saying everything backwards and we were much further than we thought.  The conductor was talking to them and told us we were on coach 9 of 12 and would need to move if we wanted to get off.  Nice to know!
We were at the wrong time of day to get good pictures
so you will have to go back to September with Jerry and Ardith.

This is one shot of the crowd.  Is 500,000 and exaggeration or not?

3.  84th Birthday Dinner
When you get your rota you are either in charge of something or a floater.  This week I am just a floater so I do something different all day long and every day is different as well.  That is kind of fun so it was a nice day.
After our shift we didn’t exercise because the gillion mile walk the day before had done Brad in.  That night at 6:30 Betty (Janet) Crocker had us over for posties (I later learned they were pasties) to help celebrate Roland 84th birthday.  Mulholland’s called to check on the time and I asked them what posties were – ‘probably little pastry desserts’ he tells me so we ate supper first.  We got there and they are HUGE Cornish pasties which is a large wonderful crust filled with meat and veggies.  She had one for all of us and one could have fed Brad and I for 2 meals.  I ate till I was sick.  At the ‘hi’ he had a sack with Ollie in it which let out a squeak.  I wanted to buy him something like that.  Sister Blake was going shopping so she found me a cheeky monkey stuffed toy that was perfect.  We gave it to him after supper and he put on quite the show for us all.  We had a great laugh.
Betty (Janet) points to the birthday boy.
Notice the small little pasties for tea!

The Osie Kissi's.
They are darling and rather short.  No really short!

4.  Again and Again
The temple went well today.  I had the spiritual thought and I was worried sick about it.  Our Prophet’s last conference talk was on walking not where Jesus walked but as Jesus walked.    I told the story of how we were supposed to get a trip to Israel with our college group in 1994.  My son was playing basketball at the time and I went to one of his games instead of the meeting on the trip.  My friend said she would sign me up for anything that was needed that night but she forgot and we didn’t get our trip to Israel.  “I have never walked where Jesus walked in Jerusalem or Galilee.  However, I have walked the halls of the Idaho Falls Temple, the Rexburg Temple, the Gilbert Temple, the Mesa Temple, the Snowflake Temple, the London Temple and various other temples through the years.  I believe that our Savior also walks through these temples.  I also believe He may stop and pray.  I wonder if His prayer wouldn’t be something like the prayer He offered in America when he visited the ‘lost sheep of other folds’ when he said: ‘And now Father, I pray unto thee for them, and also for all those who shall believe on their words, that they may believe in me, that I may in them as thou, Father, art in me, that we may be one.’ (3rd Nephi 19:23 [The Book of Mormon is an ancient account of the people that lived on the American continent before-during-after Christ and tells of how he came to visit these people after His resurrection.]  I do believe that if I can answer this prayer and try to become one with my Heavenly Father and my Savior, Jesus Christ, that I will not only walk where He walked, but as He walked.”
The day went very well in the temple and that night we finally had our hamburger party with Blake’s and Crocker’s.  Brad made 6 wonderful burgers, a pan of oven chips, (French Fried) and I made baked beans and had all the trimmings for the burgers and a plate of fruit for them.  I also made an English apple pie with ice cream.  We surely did eat and enjoy!  Afterwards we played Toss Up (Betty won) and then we talked and talked.  Lovely night.

It is relaxing if everyone can put their feet up!

The Callaghan's had their grandchildren and they loved Brad's mouse!

5.  Happy Birthday Kaiya Marie Parkinson and Ryan Staten!
It was a rather common day in the temple and then we were off to shopping.  We were too late to ride the van so went by ourselves and decided we could do everything at Aldi’s.  We bought all our food and made it home in the dark.
We had just a simple meal by ourselves and perhaps felt a bit lonely.  I worked on the computer with pic files and read a Brad a story or two.  We waited up till we could get reach Kaiya on the phone and had a fun chat with her.  Ryan is an hour later and considering we cannot call till after work, we just couldn’t stay up that late.  Hope he liked the card we sent!

6.  Happy Halloween
It seemed very early at the temple today as Brad had to open at 7:30.  We had a nice day doing this and that and covering for people who didn’t show.  By the time the shift ended I was more than ready to get off my feet.
Wrong!  Sister Crossland (her husband is the 2nd Counselor in the Temple Presidency) asked if I would teach her the machines.  I got home and Brad was already to walk so I went with him a bit and then met Sister Crossland and took her to the little gym.  I taught her all the machines and some things to do on the mat and then we walked around the grounds with Betty.  It was so very fun.
I was ready for a nice big meal but Brad made hot dogs and they were wonderful.  Good buns, lots of Sauer kraut and lots of English mustard.  Yummy!  We took some ice cream to Roger’s because she had a car wreck but she is okay.  Then computer, book and to bed.
We didn't get any trick or treaters but we did see some fireworks go off.
We are starting up.
St. Paul's in the background.
Oh, we are going up!  You cannot feel it!

A London sunset from above!

7.  Earlier!
This morning Brad had to open the temple even earlier – her left at 6:40.   I did bit on the computer and then got ready and just barely made prayer meeting.  It was a good Saturday.  We had 2 coaches come and most of the time there were plenty of people everywhere.  The Callaghan’s, our shift coordinators, had a wedding and they were not there.  So that meant everything would run smoothly  -- right?  I was helping with an instruction session when the man in charge of the session stood up and collapsed.  It was Brother Crocker!  That was rather exciting as I ran for help and then they put him in a chair and carried him out.  They took him to hospital (they do not go to the hospital) and have him on some fluids and running some tests.  That was sure a worry to us.  The rest of the day went pretty well (except Brad was to come home early since he went early and someone commented about him skipping out and that upset him).   Oh and I found another former student who actually lives here.  She is from Lewisville at home so we are in the same stake.  She said we would hike together some day.
We walked around the temple grounds a few times and headed back to the flat.  Brad was in a bit of a bad mood so we just headed to Smith and Western to have a night out by ourselves.  We had a very nice dinner.  After dinner we came home and tried to watch BYU football but they stopped the broadcast right after the pregame show.  BED!
Big Ben down there.
I have no idea why it freaked me out that our car ended up on top
of the Ferris wheel instead of hanging inside it.

Last glow of the sun.

Even the Eye was decorated for Halloween.

Parliament, Big Ben, and me.
Brad, Marie, and Big Ben!

So week 25 is finished.  Some site-seeing, lots of dinners and fun and a bit of excitement and worry as well (besides Brother Crocker here, our nephew Mitch Parkinson had melanoma surgery on Friday-we are sure praying for him as well).
I watch all these elderly couples come to the temple to work and I am in awe at how hard they try to do the Lord’s will and give of themselves when it is not easy.  I wonder how many pills it takes to keep them going from place to place in the temple all day long.  What wonderful people; so very dedicated and giving.  So full of love for their Savior and their fellow man.  Brilliant!  Just lovely.  Bless, oh Bless.

Good night Big Ben!

Be loving, what need I say more?
Stay Active,
Our love,
The Parkinson’s

Lessons from the Brits Week 24 October 19th to October 25th

My oh my!  What a wonderful day! – week!  Things are moving right along here in jolly ol’ England.  We really do feel the time is flying by as of late.  We are completely losing track of time and have no idea what day it is and sometimes what month.  I best get hold of my hat because I have a feeling we are about to enter a real spin.
Okay, so the inspiration hit late, but I have decided to add pictures of my 'other daughter' Kiana Barnes Marble and her wedding.  When she sent me the pictures I sat and cried and cried I was so sad that I missed her wedding.

Introducing the Bride as she walks from the temple.
Mother (Anne) is holding the door.

Kiana and Isaac Marble!  (And mom)
1.  Dinner Guest
I was up at the crack of dawn and working in the kitchen.  Before we left for church I had a banana cream pie made, artichoke chicken wrapped for the oven, and roll dough made setting in the frig.  Church was great.  Then we rushed home to put the chicken in the over, rolled out the rolls, got the potatoes-carrots and beans in cream sauce going, and make a tossed salad.
I actually had a wonderful dinner ready for our company 5 minutes before they got here.  We had invited Mulholland’s and we had a very nice dinner.
There was a fireside that evening at the visitor’s center and then we went to the dungeon to get on the internet to call the family.

Just beautiful!

She glued every stone on her shoes.

Lovely, even from the back.
2.  Costco Run
We got up and headed to Costco to replenish our meat supply.  That drive is going rather well for us.  We always take Mulholland’s along and Brown’s were there as well.  Nice time.  It seemed crazy but after we made it home we had to run to town to buy milk because the Costco milk is too large for our frig.

Oh, they look so happy!

I wish I knew about this picture!

The Barnes brothers join in.

A temple wedding!!
3.  Too Few
This week we are back to the afternoon shift.  We got up and exercised walking very hard around the grounds and doing some weights at the end.  Our temple shift was rather ordinary for us but perhaps not for our shift coordinators.  We usually have about 10 to 12 names on our rota’s along with the 5 coordinators.  This week we have 4.  The men also had 4 but 3 of them didn’t show up.  It was a miracle we got anything done.

The pictures at their home in Lyman.

My favorite picture.
4. Funny Sister Marsh
Brad and I started with another very fast walk and a few weights.  As far as the temple goes it was as normal as normal can be when you don’t have enough workers and everyone is doubling up duties and bustling here and there.
There was one really funny experience with our dear Sister Marsh.  If you do not remember, Sister Marsh is 78 years old, is serving her 7th mission, and served her first mission with our son Neil.  Well, Sister Marsh cannot do the stairs and must take the lift to the different floors.  She was leading an instruction session which starts in the chapel on the main floor and then goes upstairs to the instruction room.  At a certain time, she is supposed to stand up and invite the people to use the lift if they would like to do so.  A couple had asked if they could use the lift and were told they could before Sister Marsh made the announcement so they got up on their own and left.  Everyone followed them and Sister Marsh was left alone wondering what had happened.  The room was completely empty.  SO, Sister Marsh stands up, goes to the microphone and says, “Brothers and Sisters, we would like to welcome you to the London Temple.  If any of you would prefer to use the lift you may be excused to do so now.”  We were all looking all over for whoever she was talking to and there was NO ONE.  Then she calmly walked by to the lift and went upstairs to find her session.  SO FUNNY!

With her niece!

Add a few brothers.

And the whole family!
5.  Shopping with Sister Bull
We tried another new grocery store today to keep life interesting – the Crawley Sainsbury’s.  Most of the items on our list we found pretty easily so all is well.  We found Canada Ginger Ale so I stocked up on that – hurray!
A 2 and 8 sister (workers that come 2 weeks and go home 8 so they can keep their insurance on their allotment house) – Sister Bull came with us.  We got in the car and she started reciting poems and sayings and had us laughing all the way home.  She said she told her son she was going on a diet and her son said, “Mom, your sell by date is passed, your use by date has expired, your expiration date has come and gone, your way past the stop and look stage so nobody is going to give a care so eat whatever you like.”  She got us laughing and that just lead to poem after poem.  Her face doesn’t look all that happy but she is a really crack up.
Oh, and Thursday we got our internet back.  That mystery has certainly got me bugged.
I haven’t mentioned that we had a small French group this week which is always so fun but there weren’t as many this time.  Still, Thursday ended with lots of double kisses as my French sister left again.

I would bet Anne made everything!
6.  Ordinary and long!
Friday on the late shift we go and extra hour which really seems to make the day long.  It was an ordinary day without any real excitement so we made it just fine.  It seemed lonely without the French.
(A big Virgin Air just fly over – they are my favorite!)

The perfect setting!
7.  So So Saturday
We need to be at the temple at 10 on late shift Saturday’s which is not early but for some reason it always seems like a rush.  We had a pretty nice day at the temple but we surely would have liked a few more patrons.  I helped balance the till and we were 90 pence over which I assume is better than 90 pence under.  After our shift we went out to eat with Mulholland’s, Callaghan’s, Roger’s, and Sister Ibbotson and Sister Pilgrim.  We went to the Peacock or Fayre and Square and had a very nice dinner.
It was movie night and they were showing ‘The Shop Around the Corner’ with Jimmy Stewart.  We loved it!  After the movie we say BYU Women’s Volleyball come on the TV.  We thought we only got BYU TV for conference.  We rushed home and watched the match in our lounge.  It was a great match which we win 3-1.

I hoped they saved me some!

So does is mean we are totally adjusted when everything seems ordinary and nothing to share.  I don’t know if I want that feeling to keep up or not but I must admit it was a little more relaxing than normal.  Anyway, cheers!
Be Grateful, what need I say more?
Brush and floss daily,
Our love,
The Parkinson’s
